The Squash Story

Opio and Nayo were down on the farm
Picking the vegetables, doing no harm
When they came to a beautiful row
Full of squashes, big and yellow
Good to eat, but even better for play
So they picked the squash
And they quit working that day.
Great big squash, long necks like a goose
Opio threw the squash to Nayo
And the squash went Squoosh!
That squash squooshed all over the ground
And what did Nayo do next?
She threw another squash down.
Played so hard they lost all track of time
Until Baba came to find them
And slipped down in the slime!
Covered with squooshy squash
He didn't look too good
But all Baba said was
"Why'd you play with our food?!"
"Oh Baba," cried Nayo. "I'm feeling so sad.
Our food is gone and you are hurt
'Cause we have been bad."
"Oh, that's alright," he said
"But I've got one thing to say:
How we gonna get our Vitamin A?"
Opio said, "I think the answer might be
For us to eat some carrots
'Cause they help us to see.
I know they have lots of Vitamin A
And our eyes need to be strong each and every day."
Now carrots and squash aren't the only ways
You can get Vitamin A every day
This helpful vitamin can be found
In lots of vegetables growing near the ground
Greens and string beans and broccoli
And every thing in the squash family
Yellow squash, acorn squash, butternut squash, zucchini squash
There are other squashes too
So squooshing your squash you should not do
If you squoosh your squash away
You might not get your
Vitamin A
